Martin Luther King, Jr. – More Than “A Dream”

Today marks a few things. One, (Still) President Bush’s last full day in office. Two, “Obama Eve”, when tomorrow, we accept Barack Obama as our Lord and Savior (I’m being sarcastic. Please allow me this much.) But today is observing the life and times of Martin Luther King, Junior… and I’m personally am sick of it.

I am not “sick” of the day itself nor what it represents, but the way the media paints the day. While it’s a coincidence that Barack Obama will be taking office the very next day, it’s also very sad that the question of the is “Have Martin Luther King’s Dream been fulfilled". It’s almost as if electing a black President was one of those requirements that MLK said. It’s sadder that they play “I Have A Dream” speech as the ultimate MLK tribute. Well, I followed MLK’s work (outside of school, as an adult) and I will tell you that if you want to educate people, you have to show all sides of him, not just one. While I understand the media is going to play the “Dream” angle, the schooling system cops out by playing this clip and that’s that.

So, today, I focus on MLK, but not on his main speech. Down below is a collection of videos. With the exception of the first video (that would be illdoctrine.com’s Jay Smooth, who done this video last year and inspired this post), these are other famous quotes and speeches that MLK have said. I hope you enjoy these videos and remember… he was more than just “a dream”… he started the road to (and AFTER) Barack Obama.

The Most Overused Samples in Hip-Hop [LinkUp]

Ever heard “Why You Treat Me So Bad”, “I Got 5 On It” and “Satisfy You” and wondered… who’s the next artist that’s going to use that beat? Well, first off, wonder no more, because it’s going to be me. *snickers*

But if there’s one thing we love about hip-hop is that it uses samples from classic records, aka “making something from nothing”. But as producing beats and live instrumentals become more and more accepted, sampling is still one art form that is makes hip-hop unique. However, there are times when these samples are overused. Audiotuts came up with 8 of the most over-used samples in Hip-Hop history.

I don’t think they wrote this article as to bash Hip-Hop, but more to educate you. I found this article interesting, but I think the list is lacking some details. However, like all lists, they care debatable. :)

As we know, there’s a lot more to this election than what’s on the surface.

Big ups to Dan Charnas for this  educational lesson.

Remembering MLK… [Videos]

As we all know, today is observation of Martin Luther King’s Birthday. So, I’m posting up some videos as a Tribute. The usual "I Have A  Dream" video that made him famous.
However, there are other videos that don’t get the attention it deserves as well. Other quotes that this brave man once said. So, in addition to the Speech, I’m going to throw in some other things as well.

Martin Luther King Quotes to keep close to you:

"Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them."

"I am not interested in power for power’s sake, but I’m interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good."

"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
