While everyone hoped to have a Def Poetry Season 7, Russell Simmons decided to put whatever hopes of another season on hold. Instead, HBO and Russell Simmons teams up to present “Brave New Voices”. This is a seven part documentary that features teenage poets and their mentors from San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York, Santa Fe, Ft. Lauderdale, Honolulu and Ann Arbor as they prepare for Youth Speaks’ 2008 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Finals. It’s narrated by Queen Latifah, but the real stars are the young poets.
This series is of course an HBO exclusive. However, they was kind enough to showcase the first episode for free, which you can catch after the jump.
One of my favorite poets (and I’m being a little bias here because I worked with him before) featured is B. Yung. His poem that he performed during the 2008 New York City Regional Finals.
For more information about the documentry as well as the series, check out Brave New Voices website. For more on B. Yung, check out his myspace page as well as his new blog. Kids doin’ good for himself.
