Voting. It can help change the world, they say. It’s your right as an American, they say. It’s your American duty to help change the world by voting, they say. But what we are really doing is just change people in the office in hopes that they are smarter than us, better than us, and of course, hoping that they follow through with their promises. Keyword “hopes”. And that’s pathetic!
You have to do more than just “hope” for the best before, during and after the election. No matter who you are for, there’s one issue we can all agree on, and that’s our right to know what’s going on! But in order to do that, we have to realize a few things. and one thing:
Television is evil.
Look at all the news channels. It’s a circus. Realty TV? Don’t get me started on reality TV. Scripted shows, for the win, my friend! But seriously, if you expect “unbiased truths” from the media, then you have better luck talking to me and a crystal ball than getting the entire truth from the media.
A Scene From Network
The ironic part about this clip is that it’s from a movie that was made almost 33 years ago. All the integrity news reporters are replaced with talking heads such Bill O’Reilly, Anderson Cooper, Tucker Carlson, Jon Stewert and Steven Colbert. How do you tell what’s real and what’s been twisted? You can’t. (Well, maybe with the last two “anchors” I mention you can tell…) But it’s your responsibility as a citizen to make sure that after the election, whoever is in charge follows through with their promises. But how can you do that without giving up your life?
Simple. Here are a few things you can do to bring real change.
Write a letter to a congress person about an issue that is important to you and why it is important.
Start talking to people about your views. Remix their thoughts. You might inspire someone to follow through.
Join a non-profit group who’s looking out for your best interest. They are paid to follow through for you. But make sure to do your research.
When you think something isn’t going right, do more than be a talking head, take action! Make sure to follow up with the proper people and put them in their place. Call up your congressman who voted wrong, a person who isn’t doing their job for that non-profit.
Research. The things that matters to you will never be served to you. By taking the time to look into matters and educate others, you’ll be in a better position.
What if you don’t have an issue to fight for? Then look at these issues I think that would inspire you.
Voting Reform – Reform voting so that it will be a fair and accurate count.
Media & Press Reform – Hold news organizations accountable and make the media landscape more devise. Freepress.net can help you with these issues.
Net neutrality – Keeping the Internet free from restrictions. Google created a simple guide to this complex matter. Freepress.net also look into this matter as well.
Internet Access for Everyone – I personally used to fight for the Internet to be in the High School of the Virgin Islands. Now, I’m fighting for the Internet to be in everyone’s hands. The Internet is now as important food, shelter and clothing.
So, I hope these small ideas can help you bring “change you can believe it.”
In an attempt to save people from straining their eyes, I decided to change up on the look of the site. I choose another template that’s going to be a “temp design” until next month, where I will be working on a fresh design from the ground up.
While I still may make a typo or two (and grammar errors will still rage rampant), I hope that this will help people who visited in the past a lot better. And if you have urges to be my editor… feel free!
I wanted to show a new music video on Tuesday, but instead, I ranted about how difficult the music industry makes promoting them difficult (what? They don’t want free promotion). I felt as thought I didn’t get a chance to showcase any new music. So, I decided to go into my islander’s side again and pull up Buju Banton.
Buju Banton is one of my favorite old school chanters. The song “Nothing” in this video is from his 2006 record, “Too Bad”. Nothing is a pure dancehall posse track, which is weird to me because I don’t usually see posse tracks from dancehall stars. To illustrate where I’m going with this, think of any rapper who ever have beef with another rapper and then imagine them with an islander accent. Same WWE drama. So, THAT’s why I’m amused.
So, if you never experience dancehall, think of this posse cut as Dancehall 101. Enjoy!
Today, I wanted to cover Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows”. However, upon finding the official video on YouTube, I also found this:
So, I now have to write up about this. Why? Because it seems that the Music Labels (the major ones) don’t realize what they done. They need to be educated on this:
First off, by disabling embedding, you are driving traffic away from your channel. What traffic you may ask?
Let’s take what I wanted to do for example. I want to feature a music video. What I will do is I will go to “YouTube” and find that video. If I find the video, but can’t embed it, then I will go to another user. However, knowing that if that user gets too popular, you’ll shut them down, leaving me to go off youtube to another site to get the very video that you block from embedding.
In the meantime, the money you could be making from my 100+ views is gone because I’m driving traffic away from your channel and giving it to someone else. Now, you may ask “what money”? Here’s the answer:
Note what you’ll miss out. Advertising money because chances are, a click-though will result in people wanting to find out more music by this artist. But there’s also other things, like the ability to share, add to playlist and chances of them subscribing for even more chances of getting their attention.
What Music Labels (of all kinds) don’t understand is that by giving the user that ability to spread your video, we will more than likely come to the source for things. But when you do something like disable a video or speak to fans as we’re numbers, then it more than lightly turns them off.
Of course, if you want me to name one successful band that will share their music videos, then… OK GO.
This band basically did a simple music video and share it on YouTube. What happened afterwards? Not only did it caught on. Lots of people started to do their own version of the dances, giving Ok Go a brand to recognize.
For those who wants a Hip-Hop example… don’t hate. Once an Internet Star-turned-rapper celebrity Soulja Boy Tellem uses YouTube and it’s features to make sure his movement was felt. While the official music labels prevent users from embedding videos, Souljah Boy just place them on his channel and giving his fans a direct connection to him, which makes him #1 on the grinding side.
So, music labels, please stop making it hard for me and others to cover your guys! It’s bad enough that I have several broken videos on my blog. You want us to “respect your copyright” and even thought you have the tools, you refuse to use them probably.
You are losing out more by NOT allowing us to embed the videos. You might as well stop it altogether. No one will miss it.
